Safety

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has a Participation Statement that sums up its view of the risks involved in doing activities in the mountains.  This is:

“The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.”

ExclamationI agree with this statement and the principles behind it.  Enjoying the mountains safely is about having the knowledge, skills, experience and equipment to deal with the situations that arise.  It’s also about exercising good judgment.  Please make sure you have all these things with you in the mountains.

The aim of this blog is to provide useful tips and information for people who already have a good foundation in mountain knowledge, skills and experience.  It can’t be a substitute for good instruction, preparation, and decision-making.

The content of this blog, including descriptions of my own experiences climbing and walking, are accurate at the time of writing. Please be aware that things (e.g. paths, routes) may change, and that conditions (e.g. the weather) and your own abilities may impact whether a particular action (e.g. ongoing on a walk I have been on) is safe and/or enjoyable. Please undertake the research, other preparation, and sound decision-making necessary to ensure your safety and the safety of your party when in the hills and mountains.

Have fun in the mountains and please be safe.
